  • IU extreme scale pioneers offer insights at International Supercomputing Conference

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Two Indiana University computer science professors are prominently featured at the 2013 International Supercomputing Conference (ISC'13) in Leipzig, Germany, June 16-20.

    Professors Thomas Sterling and Andrew Lumsdaine will deliver keynotes and lead workshops, tutorials and discussions on a variety of high performance computing topics at ISC, the world's oldest global conference and exhibition for high performance computing, networking and storage. Sterling is a professor of informatics and computing at the IU School of Informatics and Computing (SOIC) and chief scientist and executive associate director of IU's Center for Research in Extreme Scale Technologies (CREST). Lumsdaine is a professor of computer science at SOIC and CREST director.

    Both Sterling and Lumsdaine are regarded as pioneers in the field of exascale computing (the domain of machines capable of a million trillion calculations a second). Sterling is best known as the "father of Beowulf" for his groundbreaking research that dramatically reduced the cost and increased the accessibility of supercomputers. In 1997, he and his collaborators received the Gordon Bell Prize. Lumsdaine has been an ongoing contributor to the Message Passing Interface (MPI) community through his work in Open MPI and role on the MPI Forum steering committee. (MPI is a standardized and portable form of communication used in parallel computing.) His work on large-scale graph computation has also helped guide extreme scale computing as its scope evolves to encompass data-driven problems and traditional scientific applications.

    "It's always exciting to deliver a keynote to this distinguished audience," said Sterling, who will be giving his tenth consecutive ISC keynote. "This year, I will take a look at the preceding 10 years and our HPC achievements and impact. I'll also make predictions about our future and the trends I see coming down the pike. As an HPC researcher and scientist, I have strong opinions about where we've been and where we're going."

    CREST is a research center affiliated with the Pervasive Technology Institute (funded by the Lilly Endowment), SOIC and the Office of the Vice President for IT at IU. CREST researchers are striving to transform dynamic data-driven computing through the development and application of revolutionary high performance computing platforms. Over the past 18 months, CREST has received approximately $8 million in new research funding from federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, the US Department of Energy and the US Department of Defense.
